What to expect in a counselling session.

Starting counselling can feel like a big step, especially if you’re not sure what to expect. My approach is relaxed, down-to-earth, and collaborative. There’s no pressure to be a certain way or to have everything figured out — you can simply show up as you are.

In our sessions, we’ll spend time understanding what’s going on in your life, what you’re struggling with, and what matters most to you. Together, we’ll explore patterns in thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and gently work toward greater clarity, self-understanding, and direction. Many people come to therapy wanting to feel less anxious, less stuck, or more confident — and we work toward those goals in a practical and supportive way.

My work draws from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), person-centred counselling, and insights from philosophy and mindfulness traditions, including Buddhist psychology. This means we don’t just focus on “fixing problems,” but on learning how to relate differently to thoughts and emotions, develop self-compassion, and move toward a life that feels meaningful and aligned with your values.

Sessions often involve open conversation, reflection, and sometimes practical exercises or tools you can use between sessions. Over time, therapy can help you feel more connected to yourself, more present in your life, and more capable of moving toward the things that matter most to you — whether that’s relationships, purpose, confidence, or personal growth.

Above all, counselling is a space where you don’t have to face things alone.
